The wager in taking the BAP job is that among the 75 poems you pick 40 or more will really impress any given reader. They can't just be pretty good poems, whatever John Ashbery might have said in 1988.

The guest editor mortgages his or her credibility. The house (the series editor) always wins.

Except: reputation works like compound interest.
