Max Winter compresses fiction in yesterday's Times.
The book’s protagonist, Yates, is part motivational speaker, part corporate philosopher, part Groucho Marx. In a hungover moment of honesty, he names himself “founding father of the Coalition of the Clueless” at a conference in Johannesburg, after delivering a diatribe on the evils of smugness, false self-assurance and materialism. Subsequently, two ominous men named Johnson and Johnson hire him to visit major world capitals to describe the status quo. Wise-cracking all the way, he travels from a club in Milan where everyone dresses badly to a tribal dance performance led by a white corporate mogul on a Fiji beach, complete with hot rocks for the dancers to walk on.
