Don't get me wrong, the VQR is much better than anything with both Quarterly and Review in its name usually gets to be, but to earn the title of BFMotP it's going to have to get past the LRB. Current issue features John Lanchester on the recent book and film about Wal-Mart:
Most of the objectors – particularly in America – are not objecting to the system, they are objecting to the way the system impacts on them, in the form of Wal-Mart. But if companies are free to compete on price, and free to outsource their costs in a world which, for the first time, has an effectively infinite pool of easily accessible cheap labour, then the only thing to be said to people objecting to Wal-Mart is: go off and found a new planet, because on this one, that’s how it works.
The real money shot comes in the following graf, btw.
