Reward corresponds to risk, declare investors and gamblers alike; or rather, the house and the market advertise the concept, and let those who would be rewarded step right up. The young poet hears this and, recognizing that almost everything to do with poetry is a risk, decides that there must be a reward as big as immortality connected to what appears to be a game of skill.
