Why is it so important that poets compete with each other -- is there a lesson to absorb from the sociology of coyotes?

Some poems seek to be reread. Some poems seek to be read a first time. Some poems insist on going unread, usually by means of complaint. There is not much overlap between the second and third of these groups. The first and the third appear at first to be coextensive, but it's an optical illusion.
