The journals of poets: so useful for coming to terms with the poet's poetry, and with poetry in general. But we don't read them over the poet's shoulder while they're being written.

Without at least the illusion of total candor poets' journals are awkward, like a present tense narration on an educational documentary on PBS. A wonderful experience of a kind, but hardly the dictionary illustration for the word satisfying.
